Certified Medical Dosimetrist Job Overview:

  • Perform a full range of medical dosimetrist duties as assigned by the radiation oncologist or medical physicist.
  • Perform dosimetric calculations for external beam treatments and brachytherapy.
  • Utilizing data acquired during the planning process (CT, MRI, PETCT and simulation), generate three dimensional, IMRT, SBRT, and/or SRS isodose plans following the specifications of the radiation oncologist.
  • Assist with simulations, block fabrication and obtaining patient contours as requested by physicians and radiation therapy technologists.
  • Coordinate and assist in the performance of cross sectional imaging studies as required in support of treatment planning and dose determination.
  • Document and communicate all facets of the treatment to the oncology team and assure that a copy of the treatment plan is in the patient's treatment record.
  • Exercise competence with the clinical treatment.
  • Assist Radiation Oncologist, physicist, and radiation safety personnel with brachytherapy cases within the department/OR.
  • Provide physics and technical support to the Medical physicist, in radiation protection, qualitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation oncology equipment.
  • Participate with plan development in new clinical research protocol treatments.
  • Act as Dosimetry clinical expert liaison in providing training and technical assistance with policy and procedures within clinic. 
  • As part of a patient's treatment, review the dosage and frequency numbers, confer with the physician and as directed, collaborate with the physician in recommending adjustments.
  • Prior to administering the treatment, study body scans and X-rays, in order to confirm the targeted treatment areas.
  • Assist the radiation oncologist in applying protective shields and other devices to the patient.
  • After each treatment, monitor the patient's reactions and advise the physician of any adverse or noteworthy effects.
  •  Assist Radiation Oncologist, physicist, and radiation safety personnel with brachytherapy cases within the department/OR.

Certified Medical Dosimetrist Job Qualifications:

  • BLS
  • 5 years of continuous experience as a Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) within the last six (6) years.
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Completion of a Medical Dosimetry program of at least 12 months that has been accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or completion of 36 months of clinical medical dosimetry experience under the direction of a certified medical dosimetrist or medical physicist and completion of 24 continuing education credits approved by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB). 
  • Certification: Possess and maintain certification as a Medical Dosimetrist by MDCB.
