Registered Nurse (RN) - Internal Medicine Job Overview:

  • Provide professional nursing care through the delivery, management, and coordination of care and services in a clinic setting through face-to-face encounters or via telecommunications technology (telehealth/virtual nursing) by performing nursing triage to determine the appropriate level of care, and home care advice which may be considered part of the triage process.
  • Assess and manage acute and episodic healthcare concerns, health maintenance and promotion, disease prevention and management, patient education and counseling, patient advocacy, case management, and coordination of care for patients throughout the healthcare system.
  • Screen and prioritize encounters based on the patient's condition an preferences, the situation, cultural and age-specific considerations, education level and health literacy, and/or anticipated need for urgent and emergent care.
  • Gather information and/or documentation required for continuation of care referral requests; lab and diagnostic test results (under credentialed provider or clinical support staff protocol guidance); providing healthcare information; and/or care coordination.
  • Gather critical information for patient medication renewal requests.
  • Conducts a comprehensive medication list review; verification of any side effects,  allergies, contraindications, and continued treatment needs with the patient IAW current policies/guidance.
  • Relay results to patients and arranges for appropriate follow-up care and treatment as directed by the provider.
  • Execute medical orders.
  • Perform procedures, treatments, and medication administration.
  • Any procedures or treatments performed; or medications administered, will be appropriately documented and coded.
  • Conduct a comprehensive medication list review; verification of any side effects, allergies, contraindications, and continued treatment needs with the patient IAW current policies/guidance.
  • Coordinate and/or provide emergency care, including initiation of lifesustaining measures, such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), choking first aid, bleeding control, treatment of injuries, etc.
  • Coordinate patient care in collaboration with a wide array of healthcare professionals. Facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the MTF.
  • Perform physical exam and health histories.
  • Provide health promotions, counseling, and education.
  • Direct and supervise care provide by other healthcare professionals.
  • Accountable for making patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel.
  • Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations.
  • Communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization.
  • Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate.
  • Perform nursing services identified in the TO.
  • Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes.
  • Utilization of telecommunications technology for telehealth encounters, documentation, and/or patient assessment and tracking.
  • Analyzes assessment data during patient encounters to determine preventive needs based on US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)
  • Guidelines, makes recommendations, then documents/tracks accordingly.
  • Analyzes assessment data during patient encounters to provide education; and determine labs/diagnostic tests, and/or referral recommendations based approved Clinical Practice Guidelines.
  • Conducts patient tracking to include review and entry/update of clinical documentation systems, such as the Patient Safety Reporting system, Secure
  • Messaging, Nurse Advice Line Management System (NALMS), Healthcare
  • Artifact and Image Management Solution (HAIMS), Aeromedical Services 
  • Information Management System (ASIMS), CarePoint, etc., IAW with established guidance.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and engages in evidence- based improvement projects to update and/or maintain skills and advance clinical practice.
  • Participates in/attends educational, multi-agency, and multi- departmental forums/learning opportunities.
  • Participates in process improvement and patient safety initiatives as
  • needed.
  • Executes approved Clinical Support Staff Protocols (CSSPs) IAW local guidance.
  • Actively participates in peer review.
  • Nurse may be temporarily reassigned to work in Family Health, Flight Medicine, or Internal Medicine Clinic based on staffing needs.

Registered Nurse (RN) - Internal Medicine Job Qualifications:

  • BLS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Graduate from a college or university accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Three years of full-time experience in nursing as a RN
  • At least one year (of the three years) experience in Internal Medicine. Experience in an outpatient primary care setting preferred.
  • Licensure/Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse
