Athletic Trainer job in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

The  job is a civilian position providing services to the active duty military personnel. The AT is a new position that is being added to an embedded team of specialists supporting military training to optimize Readiness. The team consists of Dietitians, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and other medical providers. The embedded team develops comprehensive education and service programs integrated with training.

The is not a clinical setting. The team will be embedded with the soldiers in an 85% male military setting. Most work will be in a military training environment: fitness center, outdoors, range, field, shooting range, obstacle courses, and combative training areas. The AT must be physically able to hike in austere environment and terrain. (no running water, no shelter, no bathrooms, no climate control, inclement weather, loud, and smoky) while carrying their own backpack with necessary supplies on occasion.

Athletic Trainer Job Overview:

  • Function as an integrated member of a BN-based multi-disciplinary team focused on optimizing military mission readiness and performance through medical availability and task specific performance by supporting basic acute care, injury control, and performance optimization. 
  • Services that transition individuals from injury and illness recovery/rehabilitation to full task-specific performance optimization.
  • Screen target population for conditions related to readiness and deployability, within scope of practice as defined by the NATA and refer as appropriate and in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
  • Provide services within scope of practice that do not require privileging and/or as stipulated by MEDCOM policies. Examples of services limited to privileged providers include, but are not limited to, dry needling/acupuncture, cupping, blood flow restriction, prescribing medications, and ordering laboratory and radiology imaging studies and would therefore not be authorized services to be performed by the ATC. 
  • Provide education, instruction, and guidance to Soldiers and BN leadership, within scope of practice and as determined by team leadership that is integrated with SRT2P team efforts and synchronized with BN training calendar, to include generating training materials to support the BN mission requirements and the Commander's intent. 
  • Provide ATC supplies and equipment recommendations to the SRT2P team for approval by BN SRT2P Coordinator. Apply, evaluate and modify prophylactic and protective equipment and techniques for Soldiers to minimize the risk of injury or re-injury per BN requisitioning procedures. Provide feedback to SRT2P team regarding ATC supplies and equipment utilization and needs. 
  • Coordinate with SRT2P team to develop and execute approved training programs for Soldiers with and without physical limitations. 
  • Attend BN physical training sessions in order to assess safety, optimize injury control, improve physical performance and provide feedback to SRT2P team. 
  • At the discretion of the Physical Therapist, perform limited evaluations (e.g., all regions except for spine)
  • Coordinate injury control programs
  • Participate in periodic and routine meetings with the assigned SRT2P Physical Therapist to review and evaluate the injury control services provided to Soldiers, discuss medical issues of concern that affect safe and appropriate Soldier care, identify existing problems, identify opportunities to improve delivered care, and provide recommendations for corrective action. 
  • Furnish data and reports, and make all records available for contract surveillance review upon request as requested by the BN SRT2P Coordinator.
  • Participate as a contributing member of the SRT2P team on issues related to injury control, sport medicine, and bridging individuals between injury and illness recovery/rehabilitation. 
  • Conduct ATC-specific equipment, product, and literature reviews to assist SRT2P team in incorporating emerging best practices. 

 

Athletic Trainer Job Qualifications:

  • National Athletic Trainer Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
  • Graduate from a college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE)
  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's Degree
  • or
  • two (2) years of relevant experience with a Master's Degree
  • Relevant experience is defined as developing and executing task and environment specific functional injury control and health/well-being programs for groups of athletes or Service Members focused on a common sport or mission performance goal. Relevant experience must have been performed within the last 5 years. Employment related to internships or graduate work is NOT considered as relevant experience.
  • Possess and maintain a current, active, valid unrestricted license in any U.S. jurisdiction
  • AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers with AED certification

 

  • Physical Demands: Required to observe BN specific training events (e.g., shooting ranges, obstacle courses, combatives). Be physically able to hike in austere environment and terrain (i.e. rocky, no running water, no shelter, no bathroom, no climate control, inclimate weather, loud, smoky) while carrying their own backpack with necessary supplies. Be physically able to lift and manipulate loads and weight plates up to 45 pounds.
  • Computer competency (Microsoft applications) and EHR databases
