Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN/LPN) - Infection Control Job Overview:

  • Initiate, perform and complete assigned duties in providing care to variable
    patient populations.
  • Complete assigned patient care based on the patients' conditions, use judgment in
    selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments, and
    accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information.
  • Observe, identify and respond to the patient's needs for care, including medication,
    equipment-assisted care and patient/family education.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous,
    intramuscular and/or intravenous) and perform treatments according to
    established policies/procedures.
  • Recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance of the RN
    and/or staff provider, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as
  • Perform support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices
    or procedures, which include, but shall not be limited to, preparing the patient,
    assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized
    instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's
    condition before, during, and following the procedure.
  • Orient peers and ancillary personnel to unit policies and procedures, skills, and
    standards of practice.
  • Integrate healthy work environment principles that result in improved patient
    healthcare delivery, education of patients and their families and employee
  • Perform organizational tasks in support of the medical facility.
  • Conduct surveillance activities to identify and assess healthcare associated
  • Review microbiological reports to identify and investigate unusual or multiple
    drug resistant pathogens (MDROs), clustering, or epidemics of healthcare
    associated infections (HAIs).
  • Compile and analyze HAIs trends, providing reports to the Infection Control Function (ICF) as specified in the Infection Control Annual Plan.
  • Notify clinic when patient education on MDRO is needed.
  • Monitor and evaluate Infection Control (IC) standards and practices throughout
    the MTF and outlying clinics
  • Observe practices during surveillance rounds (Facility Management rounds)
    Perform IC visual surveillances as tasked to assess compliance with IC Program
    policies. Identifies areas of noncompliance.
  • Report discrepancies to stakeholders for corrections.
  • Routinely advises HCWs on current IC evidence based guidelines and works
    effectively and professionally with all members of the health care team to reduce
    the opportunity for infection.
  • Perform Standard Precautions and Safe Injection Practices surveillances. Ensures
    the Infection Prevention & Control Program complies with The Joint Commission standards for ambulatory care, and AFI 44-108, Infection Prevention and Control Program
  • Present educational programs using the principles of adult learning.
  • Give presentations to include Hand Hygiene and Standard Precautions briefings.
  • Teach chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients on practices to
    prevent infections.
  • Manage the Infection Control Coordinators Program
  • Review surveillance reports and follow up on any corrective action(s).
  • Coordinate quarterly meetings and IC courses
  • Communicate policies/updates to IC coordinators
  • Assist in planning of the Infection Control Program and Infection Control Review Function activities.
  • Assist in developing the Infection Control Program Annual Plan and participates
    in the Infection Control Annual Summary reviewing IC surveillances within this
    facility and outlying clinics.
  • Assist in the development of Wing policies and procedures based on IC
    standards and national guidelines.
  • Review section specific IC operating instructions as required and provide
    suggested corrections to supervisor.


Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN/LPN) - Gastroenterology Job Qualifications:

  • BLS
  • Computer Competency
  • Certificate
  • Graduate from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited nursing program
  • LVN/LPN License: Current, full, active and unrestricted.
  • Certification from the Essentials of Infection Prevention & Control course for Infection Control offered by Texas Society of Infection Control Professionals (TSICP) or equivalent CDC course within one (1) year of employment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of practical or vocational nurse experience in the field of Infection Control after graduation and within the last five (5) years.
