Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist job overview:

  • Assists physicians with cardiac catheterization in which a small tube, or catheter, is transmitted through a patient's blood vessel from an area in the patient's peripheral vasculature to the heart.
  • Assists physicians in angioplasty, which can be used to treat blockages of various blood vessels or heart valves without the need for heart surgery.
  • Assists physicians with performing transeptal procedures which can be used to treat openings in the septum without the need for heart surgery, or for ablation of arrhythmias.
  • Assists physicians with performing intravascular/intracardiac ultrasonography.
  • Assists physicians with invasive Electrophysiology and surgical procedures including diagnostic studies, ablation, and cardiac device implantation in diagnosis and treatment of cardiac dysrhythmias.
  • Assists physicians with insertion of Intra-Aortic Balloon Catheter and initiation/ discontinuation of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Therapy. Responsible for operating machine per operator's guidelines, serving as a resource for the health care team.
  • Obtains intravenous access via small peripheral vessels as needed for administration of medication.
  • Prepares patients for cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies, cardiac device implantation, and angioplasty by shaving, cleaning, and aseptically draping the area of access.
  • During the procedure, monitors patient's temperature, blood pressure, heart rate/rhythm, oxygen saturation, pain level, and level of consciousness. Notifies the physician if physiologic condition deviates from normal/ baseline values. Understand the pharmacologic and physiologic interactions and be able to respond to correct unstable situations.
  • Operate multi-channel physiologic monitors as part of cardiac catheterization team, to measure and record functions of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems of patient during cardiac catheterization.
  • Assists the physician with establishing hemostasis after the removal of indwelling sheaths.
  • Transports patients to and from the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory before and after procedures. Patients may need to be transported to or from a variety of inpatient/ outpatient settings.
  • Participate in unit and Command Improvement (CI) activities. Assist with the development of programs that comply with all regulatory agencies and JCAHO requirements with a focus on CI, professional practice, and patient care/teaching.



Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist  job requirements:

  • BLS 
  • Current registration as a Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) as determined by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

  • ALS

  • Minimum of 2 years full time clinical experience as a Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist within the preceding 3 years in a clinical setting of comparable size and complexity.

  • Possess clinical expertise in performing a wide variety of invasive cardiovascular procedures to include: Diagnostic right and left heart cardiac catheterization; Interventional cardiac catheterization; Electrophysiology studies, catheter ablation, and cardiac device implantation; Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump insertion and therapy; Transeptal procedures; and Intravascular/Intracardiac ultrasound.
