Ophthalmology Lead Laser Technician Job Overview:

  • Screens and checks in patients and escorts patients to treatment areas. 
  • Shall assist with all aspects of patient care, to include performing initial medical screening of patients including history, distance and near visual acuity with and without correction or pinhole, pupillary light reflex, and applanation tonometry and manifest refraction.
  • Accurately prepares room & patient for examinations, therapeutic measures and procedures assuring all needed equipment and supplies are available prior to the start of the exam.
  • Takes, monitors and records physiological measurements.
  • Performs medical treatment, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures per extender treatment protocols.
  • Prepares and administers medications independently if employee has a nursing degree but if not, under the supervision of a health care provider or a registered nurse.
  • Chaperones patients, when necessary, by escorting them to various offices or clinics located within the 10th Medical Group.
  • Operates medical, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment which would include the calibration and maintenance of Zeiss topography machine, orbscan machine, pentacam machine, wavescan machine, and Visante.
  • Has knowledge of the contents of patient medical records and maintains or assists with appropriate and accurate health record storage and retrieval systems. Must be able to prepare surgical charts to include all clinical data for the surgeon.
  • Prepares and submits administrative date, when required.
  • Provides patient/parent education as requested including formal briefings to patients regarding the safety, risks and protocol of Intralase Laser in situ keratomileusis, photorefractive keratectomy and Laser-assisted sub epithelial keratectomy.
  • Performs ophthalmic studies including autorefraction, keratometry, tonometry, visual field tests, pachymetry, ophthalmic photography, and be able to establish a sterile field and assist with minor surgical  procedures. Will be responsible for set up of sterile field in operating room for refractive surgery and wet labs and training.


Ophthalmology Lead Laser Technician Job Qualifications:

  • High school degree or GED equivalent, but college degree preferred. 
  • Certified ophthalmic assistant with a nursing degree is preferred (nursing degree not required).  
  • CPR  
  • Certification of an ophthalmic assistant from Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel accredited program in Ophthalmology is preferred.  Shall be certified using Amadeus and Hansotome microkeratomes, 3.67 wavescan machine, VISX laser, Intralase laser.
  • 3 years' experience, in the last 4 years, as a ophthalmologic laser technician with preferably several thousand procedures proctored as lead laser technician.
  • Have the ability to use and maintain an autorefractor, phoropter, auto and manual keratometer, tonopen, Humphrey and Goldman visual field machine, corneal topographer, A-scan machine, pachymeter, specular microscope, ophthalmic photography equipment, slit lamp, potential acuity meter, brightness acuity test, color vision plates, stereo vision test, and personnel computers. Ocular coherence tomography, pentacam.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to interpret departmental instructions/guidelines and to provide instructions. 
  • 30 to 40 WPM
  • Able to read, understand, speak, and write English well enough to communicate effectively
  • United States citizen





 Position contingent on contract award for 1/2019 start.
