Telemetry Technician - Cardiac Monitoring Job Overview

  • Operates all types of equipment related to the Cardiac Evaluation and Therapeutic Section. 
  • Operates and performs simple mechanical repairs to a variety of electrocardiographic equipment and accessories. 
  • Operates and monitors electrocardiographic equipment to perform specialized examinations and studies involving exercise stress testing and ambulatory monitoring of arrhythmias.
  • Monitors tracings to identify arrhythmias and when gross abnormalities appear, when to repeat certain procedures, when to stop test procedures, and when to get the immediate attention of a physician.   
  • Performs Electrocardiograms to provide the physician with technical data for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of many varied heart diseases or conditions.
  • Connects electrodes or other instruments to proper anatomical areas, calibrates various recording instruments, makes proper connections to assure results and eliminate artifacts from recordings.
  • Recognizes severe characteristics caused by heart action and notifies a physician immediately of the emergency condition.
  • Operates, monitors and maintains equipment for the Holter monitoring procedure.
  • Interviews and instructs the patient, places electrocardiographic leads and calibrates the recorder.
  • Analyzes the Holter tape for disturbances of heart rhythm and recognizes rhythm abnormalities and refers those segments judged to be abnormal to the physician.
  • Operates, monitors and maintains equipment for a variety of treadmill exercise testing to include Pulmonary, Thallium and Adenosine stress testing. This involves electrocardiographic and vital sign measurements before, during and after exercise.
  • Interviews and instructs patients, places electrocardiographic and vital sign leads, and calibrates recording devices.
  • Observes patients and equipment during operation to note and prevent occurrences of artifacts caused by patient's condition or outside disturbances and marks tracings accordingly.
  • Monitors tracing, calculating and determining normal and abnormal readings and values, notes patient reactions, artifacts, and malfunctions; annotates and refers to physician.
  • Operates and performs simple mechanical repairs to a variety of electrocardiographic equipment and accessories.

Telemetry Technician - Cardiac Monitoring Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or a certificate of equivalent program
  • Completion of a basic dysrhythmia course
  • Certified Cardiology Technician (CCT)
  • Minimum of twelve (12) months experience in all types of equipment related to the Cardiac Evaluation and Therapeutic Section" within the past 3 years. 
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers


  • Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of all structures of the heart including the location and appearance of each in normal and abnormal conditions in order to evaluate cardiac  structures and functions.
  • Ability to recognize cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and ventricular premature beats, and takes appropriate action.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology and chemistry to understand drug action and effects during tests performed. Ability to work as a member of a team when performing procedures that require making rapid and accurate observations or adjustments to established practices.
