The Registered Nurse (RN) - Perioperative job is within the military medical system and is a civilian position. Civilian and military personnel work together in the extensive military medical system. Registered Nurse (RN) - Perioperative Job Overview:

  • Provide urgent/acute/critical care to ill or injured patients of all ages with complex medical and surgical pathologies.
  • Assume the responsibilities as Charge Nurse if no other Government Service or Military registered nurses are present, or if assigned those duties by the shift supervisor or other authorized individual.  
  • Administer blood/blood products and critical care medications (monitor, mix, administer, titrate) with the knowledge of actions and usual dosage of commonly used drugs.
  • Recognize and respond to life threatening arrhythmiasto include: arterial blood gas draw and interpretation, hemodynamic pressure interpretation, perform synchronized/emergency cardio version, apply noninvasive external pacemaker, perform emergency defibrillation; administer thrombolytic agents, provide naso-gastric and/or gastro-intestinal suction.
  • Perform post-operative recovery and discharge within established criteria. 
  • Care for patients on ventilators, manage a wide range of procedures of an advanced nature and difficulty where there is high risk for infection, bodily functions, and mechanical assisted by life support equipment.
  •  Manages patients requiring hemodynamic monitoring: operate hemodynamic equipment safely and effectively, obtain hemodynamic variables, uses cardiac monitoring equipment; interprets and responds appropriately to data.
  •  React with alertness and skill in any emergency situation and initiate life saving measures in the absence of a physician.
  • Possess knowledge of the pharmacology of most commonly used emergency drugs, anticipated results, usual dosages, and their location on crash cart.
  • Assist with and/or perform invasive procedures depending on scope of practice such as arterial punctures; blood draw from invasive monitoring lines; provide conscious (moderate) sedation, assist with temporary pacemaker insertion, triple lumen catheter insertion, endotracheal intubation; administer prescribed medications to include respiratory, multiple medication drips and intravenous push drugs.
  • May serve as a member of resuscitation team or emergency code teams and rapid response.
  • Observe, manage patient flow through the Emergency Room; triage patients, referring to appropriate level of care;
  • Crosstrain and float to alternate units during staffing shortage or needs.
  • Effectively document care provided on electronic charting.
  • Participate in performance improvement projects, chart and peer reviews.

Registered Nurse (RN) - Perioperative Job Qualifications:

  • ALS
  • BLS
  • PALS  
  • At least one (1) full year of experience in an Emergency Room setting within the last three years
  • Associates Degree of Nursing
  • Graduate from a NLNAC or CCNE accredited college or university
  • RN Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license. Any U.S. jurisdiction.
