Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist job in San Antonio, Texas.

Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist Job Overview:

  • Provide a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist/ophthalmologist as appropriate to the level of certification (i.e., COA, COT, or COMT). 
  • Obtain patient histories, perform prescription verification, and maintain patient records. 
  • Assist in testing patient vision. Test far and near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception. 
  • Examine the eye, using slit lamp, for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers. 
  • Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes. 
  • Measure intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test). 
  • Test field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and chart test results on graph paper. 
  • Measure axial length of eye, using ultrasound equipment. 
  • Instruct patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling. 
  • Prepares patients and performs as surgical assistant in all types of ophthalmic surgery. 
  • Prepares procedure room. 
  • Orders and maintains ophthalmologic medications, supplies and equipment for use  by the physician. Perform routine checks of medications and sterile instrument packs for expiration dates 
  • Maintains and performs required periodic calibration checks on surgical instruments and equipment. Perform user maintenance checks on specialized clinic and surgical equipment. Perform calibration checks on clinical diagnostic equipment and documents such calibration according to specification listed on equipment. 
  • Assists in administrative/clinical duties when not actively working in patient care, to include maintaining cleanliness per infection control MDWI 44-157. Performs inventory weekly or as needed. 

Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist Job Qualifications:

  • BLS
  • High School Graduate 
  • Completion of an ophthalmology or optometric technician course
  • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology or a completed a formal ophthalmic training program of the United Stated Armed Forces. 
  • One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist after certification, to include assisting in surgery. 
  •  Computer Competency (Microsoft applications, databases, medical records)
