Nuclear Medicine Technologist  Job Overview:

  • Correctly position patient for study and make adjustments necessary for the required procedure. 
  • Independently, correctly and accurately perform a full range of Nuclear Medicine procedures
  • These studies and procedures include, but are not limited to, imaging studies for the following: one, lung, renal, thyroid liver, cardiac, antibody imaging and localization of tumors, infections and Sentinel Nodes.
  • These studies/procedures are to be performed with the full spectrum of radionuclides, radiopharmaceuticals and adjunct pharmaceuticals as prescribed by the Nuclear Medicine Physicians.
  • Independently performs non-imaging procedures to include, but are not limited to, thyroid and whole body uptakes, Schillings Tests, Total Blood Volumes, Urea Breath tests, GFRs and Dosimetries. 
  • Independently, correctly and accurately perform a full range of an USP 797 compliant nuclear pharmacy tasks/procedures following MTF policies, procedures and protocols. These tasks and procedures include, but are not limited to, USP 797 'Clean Room' requirements/procedures, generator elution and testing, aseptic preparation and quality control of radiopharmaceutical kits, receipt of radioactive materials, proper radioactive and non-radioactive waste disposal, required instrumentation and computer usage, and 
  • Perform accurate radioactivity measurements using all equipment to include but not limited to Geiger/Frisker counters, scalers, and scintillation detectors IAW MTF and Division guidelines. 
  • Perform and appropriately document assigned quality control checks of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Perform quality control and safety checks for any assigned support equipment such as the crash cart, treadmills and negative pressure gauge.
  • Identify abnormalities during imaging procedures and determine need for additional images of affected area. Notify Nuclear Medicine Physician of significant scans requiring immediate attention. 
  • Process all applicable raw imaging data IAW clinic guidelines. Display and /or provide the processed finalized data or images to the nuclear medicine physician for interpretation. All images and data are to be accurately and correctly labeled with the patient demographics and the study specific and generalized study information IAW clinic policy. 
  • Immediately report and recommend necessary repairs to chain of command when diagnostic quality is degraded. 
  • Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations. Report immediately any equipment malfunctions or anomalies to the appropriate chain of command. 
  • Independently transmits study data via the Service intranet from acquisition to processing to display workstations as needed. Independently sends completed study with the appropriate study data and screen saves to the QC workstations and then to the PACs systems as assigned. 
  • Perform all required study or procedure documentation to include ancillary worksheets and study/Service forms. 
  • Performs and documents all radiation room surveys daily and appropriately and immediately report all radioactive spills or incidents through the Chain of Command. Cleans up and monitors all radioactive spills IAW clinic and Radiation Safety Office (RSO) policies and procedures. Follows all clinic RSO procedures for the safe handling of radioactive materials IAW established policy. Wears all provided radiation badges and rings and other prescribed PPE IAW policy. Performs and documents daily Hand and Foot monitoring as directed by clinic policy. Strictly adheres to all ALARA principles and policies for the protection of the patient and radiation worker. 
  • Maintain and clean equipment on a regular basis IAW MTF policies and procedures, and IAW DHA and NRC guidelines. 
  • Perform inventory 


Nuclear Medicine Technologist  Job Qualifications:

  • BLS
  • Computer Competency 
  • U.S Citizen
  • Graduate of an accredited nuclear medicine course as recognized by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). 
  • Minimum of three continuous years of experience within the last four (4) years. 
  • Accreditation in Nuclear Medicine through American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB). 
  • Licensure/Registration: Valid and unrestricted state license to practice as required in any state in the United States, District of Columbia or United States territory.
