Diagnostic Radiology Technologist Job Overview:

  • Perform diagnostic examinations utilizing the appropriate equipment. Be responsible for the independent operation of the appropriate equipment and for communicating examination results. Uses cognitive Sonography skills to identify, locate, evaluate, and record data as appropriate. 
  • Provide diagnostic images for the diagnosis and treatment of the patients with a complexity of medical problems. 
  • Use collimators, equipment locks mechanical tables and various film/screen system Possess a thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic change, effects of radiation on living organisms, and the effects of x-ray technical factors on patients and operator exposure.
  • Independently performs very difficult radiographic examinations requiring precise positioning.
  • Receives patients, explains method of procedure, positions patients, selects and sets the correct technical factors, sets up and adjust accessory equipment, and makes the exposure necessary for the requested procedures.
  • Recognizes exceptional diagnostic challenges, tailors exam to meet challenges, then consults radiologist for additional input if required. 
  • Performs procedures such as tomography, arthrography, venography, fluoroscopy and routine radiography. Sets up the radiographic rooms. Assures sterile supplies, contrast media, and other required material are available.
  • Assures the adequacy of radiation protection of all individuals within the room and adopt each patient's examination through extensive experience in solving individualized problems. 
  • Makes rapid assessment of patients deteriorating physical/physiologic condition, performs immediate corrective action if appropriate and immediately alerts physician if warranted.
  • Schedules patients for examinations.
  • Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges priorities.
  • Maintains records of patient's data, examinations performed, views taken and settings used.
  • Reviews all radiographs for optimum quality to include patient positioning, film marking, technical factors used and the display of any pathology. 
  • Retrieves films from the film library and shows x-rays to the radiologist for diagnostic evaluation. Notifies the radiologist of significant findings that require immediate attention and further visualization. Assist in needle localization s of masses. 
  • Recognize any abnormalities to achieve optimum visualization. Personal contacts are with the patients, with fellow employees in the hospital, supervisory personnel, staff radiologists and other medical personnel. Interaction with employees in other hospital departments is frequent. Personal contacts are for the purpose of performing diagnostic imaging. 

Diagnostic Radiology Technologist Job Qualifications:

  • BLS
  • Completed a program of formal education as recommended by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology that has been approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA). The program of formal education should be twenty-four (24) months in length or equivalent. 
  • Certification: ARRT American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certified in radiology
  • Minimum of one (1) year current experience. Shall have acquired experience that has provided some familiarity with medical care, anatomy, and physiology.
