Occupational Therapist Job Overview:

  • Provide full spectrum of occupational therapy services 
  • Evaluate and treat deficits in occupational performance components that include motor, neuro-musculoskeletal, cognitive, social, and psychological dysfunction. Treatment includes individual and group-based purposeful activity, exercise, physical agent modalities, fabrication and training in the use of temporary functional orthotics, splints and adaptive devices, counseling, and education. 
  • Provide assessment, education, and training in the areas of health promotion and disease/injury prevention, to include prevention of psychological dysfunction and stress management. 
  • Administer and interpret occupational therapy assessment and evaluation tools. 
  • Interpret evaluation findings to develop and coordinate intervention plans, including goals and methods to achieve stated goals. 
  • Implement the intervention plans directly or in collaboration with others. 
  • Monitor the individual's response to interventions and modify treatment plan and reevaluate as necessary. 
  • Communicate and/or collaborate with the patients, family members, caregivers, interdisciplinary professionals or other individuals verbally and in writing. 
  • Provide clinical supervision to Occupational Therapy Assistants and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants. 
  • Design treatment plans to be implemented personally by the therapist or by the occupational therapy assistants or military occupational therapy assistants. Directly oversee the plan of care by subordinate. 
  • Provide professional guidance, counseling, and evaluation and assist in directing activities 
  • and training of any assigned student. 
  • Interact effectively with patients and health professionals. Maintain a high quality standard of health care. 
  • Perform all duties with minimal supervision or guidance. The contract employees shall consult with the section chief for their assigned area and then the Chief, Rehabilitative Services, RAHC when issues cannot be resolved at the section level. 
  • Perform, when requested, as a clinical instructor in full compliance with the guidelines established by the Texas Chapter of the American Occupational Therapy Association for the mastery and assessment of clinical skills or according to other guidelines established by the occupational therapy school of the affiliating student. 
  • Prepare and present reports on patient's progress in and reaction to occupational therapy. 
  • Work with patient and family concerning appropriate occupational therapy home program. 
  • Conduct group dynamics sessions. 
  • Assist in or conduct orientation of technicians, students and staff members from other disciplines to the functions of occupational therapy. 
  • Attend clinic, department and hospital in-services and meetings as requested by the Chief of the service. 


Occupational Therapist Job Qualifications:

  • BLS
  • Computer Skill Competency
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Graduate from a program in occupational therapy accredited at the time of graduation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) or predecessor organization, to include an internship prescribed by the education institution. 
  • Certified in occupational therapy through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
  • American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) certification or specialization in orthopedic, sport and manual therapy is encouraged. Certified Hand Therapist preferred. 
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice occupational therapy. Any U.S. state honored. 
  • Clinical competency within the past two years
  • Outpatient Occupational Therapy experience
