Exercise Physiologist Job Overview:

  • Assess the fitness level of the population using sound epidemiological principles.
  • Use evidenced based exercise and behavior change theories to develop, coordinate, implement, conduct, track and evaluate a comprehensive fitness program aimed at fitness improvement and disease intervention and prevention. 
  • Administer fitness assessments, counseling, prescriptions and, medical exercise/post rehabilitation fitness programs, functional screenings, disease management, preventative services and various other health and fitness programs and activities that meet the community needs. 
  • Design, develop and establish appropriate administrative and management systems, procedures and policies to ensure the highest professional level of fitness programming within the community. 
  • Use assessment results and evidenced-based exercise and behavior change theories to plan comprehensive, integrated and effective fitness programs. 
  • Plan and conduct submaximal assessments of estimated aerobic capacity by means of cycle ergometry/heart rate monitor and computer. 
  • Assist physician(s) assigned to Basic Military Training and/or Technical Skills Training units with oversight and administration of exercise/physical training programs.
  • Perform running gait assessments and education in group and/or individual setting, under direct or indirect supervision of a privileged provider, to include barefoot and shod running assessments, running gait training, efficient running clinics, one on one musculoskeletal assessments, strength and conditioning prescriptions. 
  • Develop and implement strength training and conditioning programs for implementation in large group settings for performance optimization and primary prevention of injuries. 
  • Evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment that would enhance the benefit of the sports medicine program
  • Provide appropriate neuromuscular control and corrective exercise programs for reconditioning and/or rehabilitation of individuals with injuries. 
  • Provide postural functional exercises and self-corrective movements for reconditioning and/or rehabilitation of individuals with injuries. 
  • Assess Airmen/Trainees to screen for potential injuries/illnesses or risk factors 
  • Design and implement conditioning programs (flexibility, strength, cardiovascular fitness) to reduce the risk of injury and illness. 
  • Educate Airmen/Trainees on the importance of acclimatization and fluid and electrolyte balance in the prevention of heat illness. 
  • Educate and advise Airmen/Trainees regarding the nutritional aspects of physical activity.  


Exercise Physiologist Job Qualifications:

  • BLS
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Certified Exercise Physiologist from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Automated Eternal Defibrillator (AED) certification.
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) OR Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association
  • Five or more years of experience with performing running gait analysis and gait training in a military, collegiate, and/or professional practice setting is required. 

  • One year of experience as an Exercise Physiologist after graduation.
