Computed Tomography Technician Job Overview:

  • Receive patients and explain procedures, providing humane and appropriate care and communicate to alleviate fear of examination. Correctly position the patient for the examination and make adjustments necessary for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required. 
  • Operate CT scanner and auto injector. 
  • Receive and interpret requests or instruction for CT scans. Perform daily warm up and assigned quality control checks of the CT scanner. 
  • Perform a full range of CT examinations including but not limited to; contrast and noncontrast, angiography, 2/3D reconstruction head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis and extremities. 
  • Performs numerous complex CT examinations on all anatomical areas for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Assists radiologists and/or other physicians in performing invasive diagnostic techniques such as biopsies, aspirations, radiation therapy and interventional procedures. 
  • Identify abnormalities during testing and determine need for additional scans of affected area. Notify physician of significant scans requiring immediate attention. 
  • Maintain and clean CT equipment on a regular basis in accordance with Radiology department standards. Stock and maintain an adequate level of supplies required to perform CT examinations. Recommend necessary monthly repairs when diagnostic quality is degraded. 
  • Make minor adjustments to equipment. Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations. Program the examination equipment. Set up the machine and scanning techniques to be employed. Perform all CT examinations according to department protocols. 
  • Provides accurate diagnostic CT studies to the appropriate radiologist. This may also include tasks such as exam scheduling, reception of patient, and procedural instruction. 
  • Screen patients prior to scanning for possible IV & oral contrast allergy contra-indications, check for appropriate/current lab results, perform venipuncture, and employ appropriate infection control standards. 
  • Receive and interpret requests or instruction for CT scans. Perform warm up and assigned quality control checks of the CT scanner daily, weekly, and monthly. 
  • Assists with didactic and performance training for phase II clinical students and the permanent party staff members. Make training progress entries on weekly student evaluation forms and/or the Air Force Training Record 
  • Be able to Teach and Instruct junior members. Share your knowledge with the Team. 

Computed Tomography Technician Job Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited radiologic course
  • BLS
  • Current registration as Radiologic by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience within the last three (3) years, as a Computed Tomography technician.
