Cardiac Catheterization Technician (Electrophysiology) Job Overview:

  • Assists physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias in the Cath/EP Lab specializing in the care of patients undergoing PTCA, stent placement, IABP placement, Impella placement and EP devices and ablations. With increased experience provides resource and mentoring to new staff while exhibiting enhanced technical skills. 
  • Assist the physician during invasive and noninvasive procedures to treat cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Room preparation and breakdown to include stocking rooms, daily QC checks, radiographic, hemodynamic and computer setup, and room cleanup.
  • Prepare sterile procedure tray and patient sterile field appropriately for specified procedure type. 
  • Evaluate the status of the patient during the procedure; provide age and gender specific care, prep access site according to lab standard practice, and perform EKG lead placement, blood pressure and pulse oximetry setup for hemodynamic monitoring. 
  • Acquire and accurately document pertinent patient data in the electronic health record and enter into hemodynamic and X-ray systems. 
  • Operates all physiologic and radiographic equipment safely and correctly. 
  • Educate the patient of procedure expectations before, during and after the procedure including post-procedural limitations and restrictions. 
  • Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. 
  • Assist/perform procedures to obtain hemostasis at various percutaneous access sites to include radial, femoral, and brachial. Monitoring for hemostasis and vascular complications, including assessment of pulses manually and with 
  • Performs additional complex Cath Lab procedures as assigned such as operating the EP stimulator, closing pacemaker pockets, manipulating EP catheters, and inserting catheter introducer sheaths. 

Cardiac Catheterization Technician (Electrophysiology) Job Qualifications: 

  • Completion of an accredited Registered Cardiovascular Technician Certification (RCVT, RCIS) program, accredited Radiology Technologist program with a Certified Radiation Technologist (CRT)
  • ARRT license 
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • Completion of Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) or Certification Examination for Competency in Cardiac Electrophysiology (CEPS). 
  • Minimum of two years professional Cardiac Catheterization experience. The technician must have worked full time or part time (greater than 20 hours per week) as a professional Cardiac Catheterization Technician and/or Electrophysiology Technologist for a minimum of 2 years with at least 12 months in the last 24 months.
