Medical Physicist Job Overview:

  • Serve as the administrative coordinator for the various surveys in accordance with the American College of Radiology Guidelines and Standards for Medical Physics Monitoring.
  • Develop, perform, and analyze quality control testing of radiation producing, detecting and measuring equipment. This shall include all of the hospital's radiographic/fluoroscopic, mammography, dental x-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, digital radiography and computed radiography devices.
  • Responsible for the estimation of patient skin and fetal radiation dose from diagnostic radiological procedures.
  • Conducts and reviews radiation-shielding design plans.
  • Performs both consultative and on-site medical physics services in support of Travis AFB, California's regional medical physics mission, IAW AFI 48-148, Ionizing Radiation Protection. Supported sites are located within the Continental United States (CONUS). Services may be performed in support of other United States Federal Agencies.
  • Provides radiological physics education. Responsible to develop, present and schedule radiological physics lectures/labs to the radiology residents, fluoroscopy users and radiation workers.
  • Performs the following safety surveys: radiation scatter surveys, magnetic fringe field surveys, radiation personal protective equipment evaluations, and integrity/equivalence determinations of structural radiation shielding.
  • Contractor Personnel are not authorized to handle Air Force radioactive material until their name has been added to the Radioactive Materials License.
  • Meet radiation monitoring, quality assurance, and safety requirements to ensure compliance with licensure requirements, hospital radiation safety regulations, and national standards of performance.

Medical Physicist Job Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or higher in Medical Physics or a related physical science degree with at least 20 semester hours (30 quarter hours) of graduate or undergraduate physics from an accredited university
  • Graduate from a college in medical physics, radiological physics, health physics, or physics accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc (CAMPEP)
  • BLS
  • Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or American Board of Medical Physicists (ABMP) in diagnostic physics or in radiological physics. 
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Medical Physicist after graduation.
