The Orthopedic Technician is based on Eglin Air Force base and is a civilian position. Civilian and military personnel work together in the extensive military medical system. Orthopedic Technician position overview:

  • Assist physicians with patient care
  • Properly fits and applies pre-operative braces, crutches, and other soft goods;
  • Assists in preparation for and application of casts and orthopedic appliances; changes dressings; removes sutures, casts, and splints.
  • Assists physicians and nurses with orthopedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, fracture reductions, etc; instructs patients in cast and traction care and the use of orthopedic appliances.
  • Maintain clean and well-stocked cast and soft goods room; orders special supplies and/or equipment.
  • Coordinates data collection resources for the clinic information systems.
  • Perform the full spectrum of sterile techniques, setting up surgical trays, preparing and draping patients for surgery and assisting with post-operative dressings
  • Ensure surgical packs are cleaned and packed for sterilization after every procedure, to include restocking surgical supplies.
  • Prepare examination rooms prior to patient's arrival.
  • Assist with patient check-ins, admissions, discharges, and transfers as directed.
  • Check patient's vital signs, to include temperature, respiration, pulse, weight and blood pressure.
  • Obtain and document patient's current medical history, drug history, chief complaints, allergies and vital signs on the correct form.
  • Maintain examination room stock levels and perform routine maintenance of examination rooms
  • Enter demographic data into the computer upon patient check-in, enter diagnosis and departing time when patient is released.
  • Complete lab and x-ray requisitions in accordance with clinic policies.

Orthopedic Technician position requirements:

  • National certification by American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP) or National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists. (NBCOT)
  • Knowledge of hospital or clinic routines and procedures in orthopedics, including orthopedic trauma service, pediatrics, hand, foot and ankle, sports, and/or spine.
  • Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant or basic orthopedic course.
  • Knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy and physiology; principles of asepsis and sterile techniques
  • Minimum of One (1) year within the last 2 years of related experience in an accredited health care hospital
