Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) - Critical Care job in Bethesda, MD.  

The Pediatric Critical Care Nurse Practitioner and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology NP position is at Walter Reed Medical Center and is a civilian position providing services within the extensive military medical system, which provides services to active duty service members, military retirees, and their families. Civilian and military personnel work together in the hospitals and clinics. It is a wonderful opportunity to work in a fantastic medical system serving an inspiring patient population. 

The Nurse Practitioner shall provide services as the pediatric critical care nurse practitioner and pediatric hematology/oncology nurse at Walter Reed Medical Center. 


Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) Critical Care position overview:

  • Conduct physical assessment of pediatric patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) that has 4 beds with expandable capacity to 8 beds including isolation beds
  • Perform a complete exam (including developmental assessment when possible) and shall obtain diagnostic laboratory and radiological studies as the patient's condition dictates.
  • Collaborate with the intensivist, or designee to formulate a plan of care that is implemented, re-evaluated and updated until discharge or transfer
  • Consult with and coordinate care of the multidisciplinary medical and surgical team (Pediatric ward, clinic, the Emergency department, OR and PACU)
  • Facile with the gamut of pediatric critical care procedures to include, but not limited to, lumbar punctures, arterial catheter placement, central venous catheter placement, emergent endotracheal intubation, deep sedation, chest tube placement, and mechanical ventilation. 
  • Case by case basis, participate in Pediatric critical care transport and deep sedations under the supervision of the Pediatric Critical Care Attending
  • Responsible for the medical training and medical monitoring of the pediatric housestaff, as well as the nursing staff assigned to pediatric patients in the PICU
  • Participation in the hospital based Pediatric Advanced Life Support Classes and other training 
  • Responsible for coordination related to the Pediatric Critical Care Transport System - accept admissions from outlying DOD medical centers in consultation with the Pediatric Critical Care Attending
  • Reassess patient's condition and revise plan of care 
  • Administer medications, assess and document patient response to medications administered
  • Instruct patient/family regarding prescribed medications/therapies and surgical/diagnostic procedures that must be accomplished, 
  • Inhalation therapy treatments, with knowledge of medications utilized in this treatment and reactions
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and their implications (Critical Care Unit, Emergency Room) 
  • Assess patient/family knowledge level, implement plan of instructions and record patient/family demonstrated level of understanding, 
  • Operate defibrillator, EKG machine and cardiac monitor, 
  • Care for patients with Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines and mechanical ventilators (Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Room, ER, and Newborn) 
  • Interpret pertinent lab values, use electronic thermometers, infusion and Patient Controlled Analgesia pumps, 
  • Initiate life saving measures in the absence of a physician, 
  • Identify impending or existing emotional or psychiatric crisis and provide appropriate intervention
  • Use cardiac/apnea equipment, interpret generated data and respond appropriately to data. Pediatrics nurses shall be expected to identify gross changes in respiratory patterns and/or life threatening arrhythmias as seen on the monitor


Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) Critical Care position requirements:

  • 4 years of experience within the past five years, routinely practicing as a NP in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • DEA license
  • Maryland NP License (any U.S. State or Territory. Current, unrestricted)
  • Graduate from appoved nursing school
